HARRIS LENOWITZ is associate professor of Hebrew in the Middle East Center at the University of Utah and chairman of its Jewish Studies program. His major field of interest is Jewish literature. The paper was originally presented at a B. H. Roberts Society meeting on biblical exegesis in the spring of 1986.
