Call for Submissions: “LGBTQ Experiences, the Nov 2015 Policy, and the LDS Church”
February 15, 2025
Deadline: May 1st
The relationship between The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and its LGBTQ members has been shaped by evolving policies, theological discussions, and deeply personal experiences. From official church positions to grassroots efforts for inclusion, LGBTQ individuals and their families have navigated both challenges and moments of hope within and without the faith community.
As we continue to examine the ongoing impact of past policies—including the November 2015 policy that defined same-sex marriage as apostasy and restricted baptism for children of same-sex couples—we invite submissions that explore LGBTQ experiences in the LDS Church from a variety of perspectives. Submissions may address, but are not limited to, the following topics:
- Social Scientific Approaches – Investigate how LDS LGBTQ policies have affected membership, mental health, or community dynamics. Examine the evolving relationship between the church and broader public discourse on LGBTQ issues.
- Theological and Ethical Insights – Analyze LDS scriptural and doctrinal perspectives on LGBTQ inclusion. Explore alternative frameworks for understanding sexual morality, gender identity, and covenant belonging.
- Historical Perspectives – Trace the development of LGBTQ-related policies and attitudes in the church. Compare LDS experiences with those of other religious traditions.
- Personal Reflections – Share personal stories of navigating faith and identity, experiences of exclusion or inclusion, and reflections on LGBTQ belonging in LDS spaces.
- Creative Works – We welcome poetry, fiction, creative nonfiction, art, and other forms of expression that engage with LGBTQ themes, faith, and community in meaningful ways.
Submission Guidelines:
- Manuscripts should adhere to our general submission guidelines available on our website: www.dialoguejournal.com/submissions.
- Scholarly articles should be well-researched and properly cited.
- Personal essays, poetry, and fiction should reflect a deep engagement with the theme.
- Submissions should be original and not under consideration elsewhere.
We look forward to your submissions and to fostering an ongoing, thoughtful dialogue on LGBTQ experiences within the LDS faith. Your contributions will help enrich understanding and engagement within the community and beyond.
