The Joseph Smith Papers recently published the fourth volume in its Revelations and Translations series: Book of Abraham and Related Manuscripts. With this publication, readers will glean additional insight into the nineteenth-century coming forth of the Book of Abraham, the relationship between the Latter-day Saint work of scripture and the Egyptian language documents (“Kirtland Egyptian Papers”), and Joseph Smith’s efforts and processes of translation. The coming forth of the Book of Abraham, then, not only offers a fascinating story, but it presents clues to the larger context of Joseph Smith’s overall translation efforts.
