Alma 39-42 — August 2
Maxine Hanks lectures and writes on history, women’s studies and theology in Mormon studies and Christian liturgy. She did her bachelor’s in Gender Studies at the University of Utah, and her masters work in History at Arizona State University, with additional graduate work in theology and religious studies at Harvard Divinity and other schools. She was a research fellow with the Utah for Humanities. Her first book, Women and Authority, recovered Mormon feminist history and feminist theology. Subsequent books include Mormon Faith in America and Getting Together with Yesterday. Maxine was one of the “September Six” excommunicated by the LDS Church in 1993 for her work on Mormon feminist theology. She pursued clergy and liturgical studies in gnostic Christianity and interfaith ministry, serving as volunteer chaplain at Holy Cross Chapel, as well as on the Salt Lake Interfaith council. Hanks returned to LDS Church membership in 2012 and has served in Young Women’s and Relief Society, and teaching Sunday classes in her ward.
