JUDY CURTIS is a graduate of BYU and Boston University. She recently completed a creative writing program at Phoenix College. She has had poems published in Dialogue, Irreantum, and Exponent II. She lives in Phoenix where she writes, gardens, and plans trips to see grandchildren. She is a volunteer at the Desert Botanical Garden, a Master Gardener, and a Master Watershed Steward.

where Grandpa ran his eighty head in summer,
the creek slowed and eased its crippled way
down over gravel and stones,

All that has gone before makes the now, somehow.
Whys are sucked deep into the darkened spirit’s
black hole where desperate reaching retrieves
distraught questions from God’s battered children.
Response comes in increments,
not yes or no, butmaybe, no matter, not yet.
