RICHARD SAUNDERS is Special Collections Librarian at Montana State University, Bozeman. He is currently writing a biography of Dale Morgan. An earlier version of his essay was presented at the Mormon History Association, 15 May 1994, in Park City, Utah, as "'The Strange Mixture of Emotion and Intellect': Dale L.
